So here's something interesting.
I was getting a haircut tonight after class at Douglass J, right? (I promise this is going somewhere.) And the woman checking people in recognized Undoing Gender (or rather, recognized the author), as evidently she'd been a woman's studies minor in college. So the guy cutting my hair overheard this, and we had a really interesting conversation, the main point of which being this:
He'd recently started a relationship with a new guy, and (he actually said this in so many words) they were still in the process of figuring out who's who in the relationship, i.e. domestically. He was talking about how being in a relationship with someone different actively changed who he was within the relationship. Isn't that interesting? And then, I suppose on a more basic level, it also changed sort of his public role in the relationship from being the more masculine one in most of his old relationships to being the more feminine one. And he articulated that it was kind of weird he felt obligated to figure out the masculine/feminine thing, but that people expected it, so he just unconsciously felt obligated to figure it out.
So yeah, that's not my blog post for the week, but it was a really interesting conversation. He had some really interesting points about gender performatives and discourse on sexuality, as well. So if anyone needs a haircut soon, I have a recommendation. ;)

ReplyDeleteSee, I think this is an awesome post, whether it's official or not. This exchange just goes to prove how fluid gender and sexuality really are. It's interesting that he feels his role has changed to being more feminine and I wonder...has that had a tangible impact on him? As in, does he act more feminine now that he's in that role? Or has his physical dress and/or demeanor changed? Just curious, given all of our discussions on how outward, bodily expressions are a significant part of the performance.
I love this conversation, and the really unique perspective of your hair dresser. Judith Butler, bringing people together...
